Canine Reproduction

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The cycle in female dogs is spit up into 4 cycles. Female dogs usually have 2 estrus or “heat” periods per year (which is about 6 months apart). Each cycle lasts about 2 to 3 weeks typically and in some dogs are much longer. The first heat occurs between 6 and 15 months of age, depending on the size of the dog (later in larger breeds). A Female can become pregnant during their first heat or any later heat period.

Dog Ultrasonography

Ultrasound can be used to determine pregnancy status, the age of the fetus.  It can also accurately determine the presence of a viable embryo as early as 30 days after mating. Human ultrasounds are better when it comes to counting how many fetuses are in the womb. That being said, if you are wanting to get a better count, you would need to schedule an x-ray about 50 days after mating. At this time there skeletal struture is formed and helps out the process of body counting.

Puppy Estrus Cycles

  • Proestrus - Start of heat. Lasts 7 to 10 days. Vulva swells and blood flows. Females attract males but will not allow mounting.
  • Estrus - Mating period. Lasts 5 to 10 days. Blood flow lessens and then stops. Females attract and accept males. Ovulation occurs during this time, usually 2 to 3 days after mating.

  • Diestrus - The period 10 to 140 days after heat, when the dog is either pregnant or in a resting phase.

  • Anestrus - The resting period between diestrus and the next heat cycle.

What to do

When you notice your female dog is beginning to bleed, call us and schedule for a doctors consult and progesterone test 7-10 days after day 1.

Dr. Seals will then talk you through how the whole process works and how to get ready for it.

Progesterone testing is a 30 - 40 minute test that checks the estrogen levels in your dog. We will do an estrogen level every 2 days after, to track the perfect time to begin the procedure.

Once the range is ideal, you'd then admit your animal for the day, to allow for the doctor to collect semen and insert it into the female. The doctor may try a few times during the day to give a better chance of impregnating your dog
